Reading as a place to live and work

Our mission at Ethical Reading is to creating positive change in the greater Reading area. but why? How does Reading compare with other places in the UK? Does it need positive change?

There are several sources of comparative data for Reading, The Centre for Cities annual comparator compares the “PUA” – Primary Urban Area – of Reading plus Wokingham with 63 others in the UK. This shows that the Reading and Wokingham PUA is part of a prosperous south east, comparable with Oxford, Cambridge and London in factors such as employment, skills and innovation. Its inequality is also comparable, while housing is more affordable than in Oxford and less than in Southampton.

Nesta’s Creativity index also has the Reading and Wokingham PUA highly ranked – with many micro businesses in IT, software and computer services.

The Thriving Places Index measures the conditions for equitable, sustainable well being. The comparison between Reading and Wokingham – studied separately in this index – highlights some of the ways in which Reading could benefit from positive change. Reading scores lower than Wokingham on local conditions such as environment, mental and physical health, work and local economy, people and community.

Our vision at Ethical Reading is that society can be positively transformed by:

  • individuals
  • and organisations of all sorts – private, public, third sector
  • with deeply rooted ethical behaviour
  • who are strongly engaged with their community

So we are building a community of organisations and people in the greater Reading area to make an impact.

We believe that you eat an elephant a bite at a time! So our programme of meetups brings like minded people together to discuss ethical issues related to ethical issues for people in their workplace and the community. The first have been on Living Wage, Mental Health, Ethics and AI and Bullying. They are held at the London Road campus of the University of Reading every 4th Tuesday of the month, from 7 to 9pm, and are free – but please sign up via the website or Eventbrite.

We have also set up, with Brighter Berkshire, the Brighter and Ethical Workplaces project to improve the mental health environment of workplaces in Reading and the surrounding areas.

If you share our vision, please become a member, and if you would like to work with us to help us achieve it, please get in touch!
