Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the Net Zero Reporting fundamentals event held at the Crowe LLP offices in Reading. The event proved to be an enlightening and thought-provoking experience, shedding light on the burning issue of how our Reading can define and measure its progress towards achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030. With the co-chair of the Reading Climate Change partnership passionately emphasising the need for the entire community’s commitment, it became clear that the journey towards a sustainable future begins with us.
Unveiling UK Government Measurements
One of the most interesting aspects of the event was the introduction of upcoming UK government measurements, which will play a crucial role in driving the transition to Net Zero. These measurements are classified into three scopes:
- Scope 1, encompassing the energy created by an organisation;
- Scope 2, focusing on the energy consumed by an organisation; and
- Scope 3, which considers the energy generated by an organisation’s supply or value chain.
By understanding and incorporating these measurements into our strategies, we can comprehensively address our carbon footprint.
Transition Planning for Businesses
A key takeaway from the event was the emphasis on the importance of a Transition plan for all businesses in Reading. This plan serves as a roadmap for organisations to create a framework that includes Governance, Risk management, strategy, and metrics aligned with the Net Zero objective. By developing and implementing these plans, businesses can actively contribute to the community’s collective efforts to achieve Net Zero. It was encouraging to learn that recognised sustainability systems such as B Corp or ISO 14001 can be adopted to facilitate this transition, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Moving Beyond Greenwashing
The event urged everyone to move away urgently from practices such as greenwashing. No longer can we rely on end-of-year impact or investor reports that lack substantial numerical data. Instead, we need to embrace a culture of transparency, rooted in robust measurement systems that provide clear and quantifiable information. By adopting recognised standards and avoiding greenwashing, we can build trust and credibility in our sustainability endeavours.
Both Crowe and NatWest are actively providing transition planning advice for organisations embarking on their Net Zero journey. Even small organisations or groups, irrespective of their banking relationships, can benefit from their guidance and expertise.

It was clear that achieving Net Zero carbon emissions in Reading by 2030 requires the collective commitment of every member of our community. By embracing the upcoming UK government measurements, developing transition plans, adopting credible measurement systems, and receiving guidance from supportive organisations like Crowe and NatWest, we can pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
